Here’s a scenario, let’s say someone meets you in a networking event. After the event, that person wants to know more about you. So what he did is he type your name on google. Do you know what that person will find out about you?
I have been googling my name for 2 years now. Out of curiosity, I wanted to find out what will show up about me. If you are a frequent internet user, chances are you also googled yourself already at least once.
Google is the most popular search engine today and the best way to search for something is by googling it. In the same way, the best way to find out more about a person is by googling his name.
In fact 80% of employers google their candidates before calling them in for interviews. Anyone can google your name. It’s so easy. The question is, “do you know what others will find out about you?”
Here are 3 reasons why you should google your name.
1. Know what’s out there about you.
As you surf the internet and interact with people on social media, you are leaving a digital trail of words and pictures that are indexed by Google’s robots and then offered for anybody to see. Once your name hits google, there is virtually nothing you can do about it. So when somebody google your name, information about you will be shown in the search results.
By googling your name, you will see what other people would see. Current and future employers will most probably google you. Potential business partners and clients will most probably do the same. So it is very important to be one step ahead of them by knowing what is out there about you so you know what to do about it.
TIP: Use private browsing mode when doing the google test. In google chrome you can do that by opening a new incognito window. For internet explorer, it is called “inprivate browsing”. For firefox, “private window”.
Why you have to do this? You will get a more neutral results when you are in private mode. The search results will be less affected by your browsing preferences and previous online activities.
2. Make changes to the existing content.
If you find something posted on the internet about you that you don’t like say for example somebody is posting bad rumors about you. Or somebody is posting your personal information online. You can try to stop it before this information harm you and your reputation.
In many cases though, you may well find out that you are the one destroying your reputation online. You probably want to remove old posts on facebook and other social media that you don’t want other people to see.
3. Advance your career and grow your business.
By googling your name you will be in a good position to advance your career and grow your business. After knowing what’s out there about you and making the necessary changes to existing content, you now have the opportunity to create new and fresh content that you want people to see.
You have the ability to control what shows up on google search results. You have the opportunity to build a strong online brand. As a professional you want your current and future employer to find out good things about you. As a business owner, you want your potential customers to find you as one of the best in your industry.
TIP: To make it easier for people to find you, use your full name in your social media profile and url. For example, my facebook page is facebook.com/JanreyCantos and my twitter account is @JanreyCantos
Make it easy for other people to find you. Use your name as your website domain name. Like my blog which is JanreyCantos.com.
Also maintaining a blog is becoming more and more important today. If you really want to build a good online reputation and a strong online personal brand, having your own blog is necessary.
