Goal Setting: How to Write Effective Goals

You probably learned already that writing down goals is an important step in achieving it. If not, I have 3 reasons why you should write down your goals. I suggest you read it first before reading this one.

To right effective goals, there is a very popular formula you can use and follow. They call it “SMART” goals.

I know most of you heard about it before but the question is, do we really set “SMART” goals? Have we done it before? If you haven’t tried it, now is the best time to do it.

S – stands for Specific. You have to know exactly what it is that you want. Be very clear up to the smallest details of it. Specific goals have a greater chance of being accomplished than a general goal.

BAD Goal: Get in shape.

Specific Goal: Go to the gym 3 times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and work out for 1 hr each day.

M – stands for Measurable. You must quantify your goals so that you can track your progress. This will help you determine whether you hit the goal or not.

Bad Goal: Lose weight.
Measurable Goal: Lose 10 kilos.

A – is Attainable. Your goals must be within your capacity. Do not set goals that are too far away and out of reach. Make sure that it is attainable but also make sure that it is outside your comfort zone.

Bad Goal: Work out for 4 hours everyday.
Attainable Goal: Work out for 1 hour every other day.

R – is Realistic. A good goal should stretch you, but you should use your common sense. A goal can be ambitious but still realistic.

Bad Goal: Start 5 new businesses.
Realistic Goal: Start one business at a time.

T – is Time-bound. Your goal should have a deadline. When do you plan to hit it? Set a concrete time frame for completion to create a sense of urgency. Remember this, a goal without a deadline is just a dream.

Bad Goal: Lose 10 Kilos.
Time-bounded Goad: Lose 10 Kilos by October 31.

 

There you have it. Start making “SMART” goals today. Your goal should be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time bounded.

Most people fail in life not because they set high goals and miss. Most people fail in life because they set low goals and they attain them.
